In just under two weeks, the 2011 World Club Championship will take place in Turku, Finland. I am writing today to provide you with some information on the event and let you know what we have planned in terms of outreach so that you can follow our Canadian athletes while they are competing in Turku. As a bit of background, the first world club championship took place in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario in 2008. The Cambridge Turbos came away with the inaugural world club championship title and they will travel to Finland to defend that title. They will compete against Canada's Richmond Hill Lightning as well three club teams from Finland - Raision Nuorisokiekko ry (RNK), Lapinlahden Luistin -89 (LL-89), Luvian Kiekko -82 (LuKi-82), and one club team from Sweden - Ulriksdals SK (USK). The event starts on December 28, 2011 and finals will be held on January 1, 2012. All games will be held at Kupittaa Ice Rink in Turku, Finland and a full schedule can be found here. This link will also provide game-by-game results and stats throughout the event. All games involving Canadian teams will have live stats input on this website. To give you a bit more information about the Cambridge Turbos, a roster can be found here. The Turbos currently sit in third place in the National Ringette League's Eastern Conference standings with 11 wins, one loss and two shootout losses (24 points). I would also like to point out that two Canadian officials will also be participating in the event - Lorie Grant (Kitchener, ON) who has been officiating for 16 years and Jaimie Nelson (High River, AB) who has been officiating for 14 years. My colleague Frances Losier (Sport Development Director) and I will be onsite in Finland throughout the event. We will be undertaking a number of activities to make sure everyone back home can follow along. Here is a rundown of the activities: - We will be writing and distributing a daily media release outlining what went on during the day.
